6 Great Tips to Launch Your Second Career

6 Great Tips to Launch Your Second Career 6 Great Tips to Launch Your Second Career Its leid just individual jobs that have come under threat, but entire career paths. We live in an era where entire professions are being supplanted by rapid technological innovationand automation. Not only can we no longer expect a job for life We may not even be able to expect one career for life. Its very likely that most us will have second careers, and some of us may even have third or fourth careers. Despite this fact, much of the career advice one finds on the Internet and elsewhere focuses on how tolaunch your first career. In my opinion, its high time we started talking about how professionals can start their second or third careers. Today, then, I offer six tips on that very subject1. Learn From Your First CareerLaunching a second career means more thansimply doing the exact opposite of your current career. You may even like some aspects of your current career, and you dont have to discard t hem entirely.Rather, what you should do is take a look at your current career and identify the things you like and the things you dislike.Make a list of the likes and dislikes, and then seek out a second career thatretains the likes and dispenses with the dislikes.2. Select Your New Career Based on Your Well-Prepared Career GoalsBefore selecting a newcareer, you need to clearly set out your new career goals. For example, millions of Americans between the ages of 44 and 70 are looking for encore careers. These are second careers thatcombine personal meaning, social impact, and, levels of income that are consistent with or higher than a persons income in their previous career. Younger career-changers may also be looking for such encore careers, or they may be driven by desires likeincreased income, job satisfaction and engagement, and employability.Once you are crystal clear on your career goals, you can go about choosing a new career path that best aligns with behauptung goals.3. Bewa re Industries and Professions Where Jobs Are in Terminal DeclineWe live in volatile times Globalization and increasing automation mean that many industries will experiencemassive reductions jobs over the next 10-20 years. The Occupational Outlook Handbook provided by the U.S. Bureauof Labor Statisticsprovides forecasts about declining and rising industries over the next decade. A recent Oxford Martin School studysimilarly surveys thejobs that are most vulnerable to automation in the coming years. I highly suggest career-changers spend some time studying these resources to ensure that the new careers they choose dont disappear a few years down the road.4. Select a Career path Where There Jobs and Salaries Are Expected to GrowRelated to the previous tip, career-changers should try to get into career paths where the escalator is going up, not down. You can find out which professions have the most growth potential using the sources presented above.5. Leverage Your ConnectionsChanging car eers isnt easy, but career-changers do have at least one advantage over first-timers who are new to the working world their networks. Most career-changers have likely built powerful networks of high-level contacts over the course of their first careers. They can leverage these networks to find new opportunities in new career paths.Remember, studies show that candidates who are referred to an employer are much more likely to be called to interview and offered a job. As a career-changer, your personal and professional is the secret weapon that can give you an edge over those who are just starting out. Use it.6. Obtaina Relevant Certification to Boost Your CV and Demonstrate Commitment.A great way to prepare yourself for your new career and to show potential employers that you are committed to your second career path is to obtain a relevant certification via night school or online learning. Taking the time and effort to engage in professional developmentwillprove to employers that you are dedicated and ready to give your new career all that you have. Employers will look favorably on this, and youll be more likely to land interviews and jobs as a result.-Making a career change can be difficult, but its also increasingly becoming the norm. Starting a second career isnt the same as starting your first, but if you follow these tips, youll fleck yourself for success on your new professional path.

Salary Requirements

Salary RequirementsSalary RequirementsResearch the going rate for your target job now so youre prepared to answer salary requirement questions during the interview.Q When asked about my salary requirements, I never know what to say. If I say a low figure, they have no reason to offer more money. If I give a figure thats too high, they may disregard me as a candidate. Whats the right response? Deb H.A The first rule of salary negotiation is to avoid discussing numbers until the company has extended an offer. This is when you have the most power to negotiate. But as any job seeker will tell you, this is no simple feat. Recruiters typically try to pull this information out of you as early as the initial phone screen, if they didnt already request your salary requirements as part of the application process. Here are a couple phrases you can use (courtesy of Jack Chapman, author of the book How to Make $1000 a Minute ) to deflect questions about your salary requirementsIm sure we can come to a good salary agreement if Im the right rolle for the job, so lets first agree on whetherbei I am.I have some idea of the market, but for a moment lets start with your sortiment. What do you have budgeted for the position? You can try to deflect the questions upfront once, maybe twice, but if the recruiter is insistent, youll need to be prepared with some figures.First things first, do your research. Use Ladders Job Market Guide and Companies pages to discover the going rate for your targeted job with respect to your relevant years of experience and educational background, as well as the industry and geographic location of the jobs youre targeting. You can start by looking up how your current role compares to the market rate, and then also change some of the variables to match those of the companies youre applying to. If the roles you are targeting are in different industries or locations, or the size of the company is very different, this could have an impact on what salary you c an expect to make.Once youve done the research, come up with three numbersWhats the ideal dollar amount you want (and still have the recruiter take you seriously)? What dollar amount (given the going rate) is reasonable and would still make you happy? What is the lowest dollar amount youd accept? These three numbers make up the compensation range that is in alignment with the going rate for your targeted role, and that would make you happy. If youre forced to state your salary requirements upfront, use the researched number you found to be the fair market value (the same goes for an online application that demands a numeric response).Remember, your value to a prospective employer does not go down just because times are tough. Good employees are even more important to the success of an organization in a challenging economic environment. You just need to be able to explain why youre worth what youre asking for based on your research of the market and the value you can bring to the table. Again, the most important thing you can do is delay the compensation conversation as long as humanly possible so you have time to build a rapport with your interviewers monetize what you can do, and how you can personally affect the bottom line at the company and move them from what Chapman describes as the budget state of mind (How much is this person going to cost us?) to the judge it mindset (We need this person Shed be such a great asset to the company how can we get her to join us?).Click on the following link to access Ladders Salary QA Series with Jack Chapman.

How to talk to working moms The dos and donts

How to talk to working moms The dos and dontsHow to talk to working moms The dos and dontsI run my own law firm, and Im a mother of two. Both of these aspects of my life are central to my identity. I have questioned whether my children would be better off if I were home full time. However, I love the highs and lows of a courtroom practice, and I feel honored to help my clients through incredibly difficult periods in their lives. I know the fulfillment from my work makes me a better mom when I am with my children. And, because my work affects my clients children, I know I am better at my job because I have children.

If soThey continue to look for any applicable education, certifications, or other required criteria. If not, they move on. If soThat resume gets placed in the maybe pile and they will come back to reevaluate it and compare it to the other resumes that end up in the maybe pile. This might make the employer/recruiter seem a little cruel and h eartless but theyre not. How to Deal With Your Workplace Pet Peeves - The Muse

How to Deal With Your Workplace Pet Peeves - The MuseHow to Deal With Your Workplace Pet Peeves After going through the whole job search process and landing an awesome position that you abflug settling in at, it happens. The co-worker sitting beside you starts chewing gum. Very loudly, I might add. Its distracting you from getting your tasks done (and, frankly, its pretty gross to listen to all day long). Looking around, no one else seems to have issues with it. Would I seem mean if I ask herbei to stop? you ask yourself. Shes such a nice person to work with- I wouldnt want to seem high-maintenance.So you suffer in silence. If this sounds familiar to you, you probably know what its like to have a few pet peeves in the office. And while you might think these are tiny details in the bigger picture (at least you have a steady job and livable wage), its ultimately better for your health (and sanity) for you to confront these small irritations and do your best to mitigate them. So, heres a list of all the things that ever bothered you at work- and how to get over them accordingly.Inappropriate Co-worker Behavior (at Least by Your Standards)A large amount of office problems can be attributed to the lovely people you see and share space with every day your colleagues. Some of the less-than-lovely things they might be doing with their time includeClipping their nailsEating pungent foodWearing strong perfume or cologneWhistling, humming, or singingChewing gumComplaining (incessantly)Wearing clothing thats too casualMaking personal callsTaking their shoes offHow to DealThe good news is that while these activities seem like they last forever in the moment, they usually do end. So, the best thing you can do is remove yourself from the environment- either physically to a new space or mentally with some headphones- to get a breather. If some of these seem like more repeat offenses, its OK to recognize how they may be negatively affecting your ability to work. Dont be afraid t o bring up the annoyance to the person or raise the issue with a supervisor to see how best to go forward. It can be as simple as saying, Listening to people chew gum is one of my biggest pet peeves, do you mind chewing a little more quietly. And, if theres anything Im doing thats bothering you, please dont hesitate to tell me. Keep in mind Tone is everything in these conversations. More often than not, the offender in this case doesnt realize his or her habits are affecting anyone else- meaning he or she will go out of the way to rectify them.Communication MishapsUnless youre a communication wizard, youve probably faced some of these irritating things Long email chainsHitting reply allAwkward phone callsMeetings that perpetually start or end lateUnnecessary CC-ingBasic grammar mistakesNot responding after repeated follow-upsInterruptingHow to DealLets just start by saying that these small things tend to bother most people (if not all). How to handle it? Trial and error Ask politely to be excluded from chains, gently point out recurring issues, or try to find the root of the issue and remedy it. For example Are people always running late for meetings because they have back-to-back meetings? Yes? Try moving your weekly check-in to a different day then. Or, if a lot of team members seem to be struggling with the same issue, bring it up to your manager to see if he or she wants to address it. But remember, at the end of the day, everyone slips up with mistakes like these (including you), so try to take a deep breath if its a one-time thing. Also, as annoying as this fact is, things like awkward phone calls are simply a part of being a working professional.Work EnvironmentHere are a few things that happen in the office that you arent exactly in control of Too hot or too cold temperatureA really loud working environment Disorganized shared workspacesA fridge stuffed with old leftoversCluttered desksHow to DealWhile any one of these can certainly be annoying working conditions, a lot of it is out of your control. The good news? That means you dont have to put in a whole lot of effort toward changing it- all you have to do is bring up your concerns with a supervisor or an office manager. Odds are he or she will have some kind of solution on hand (since you arent the first person to be too cold in an office). With that said, even if a solution isnt offered to you- you can often find a workaround headphones for a loud office, an office sweatshirt for high AC days, and so on. Ideal? No. But a fix? Yes.And, if its something more communal, like end-of-day kitchen messiness that you always end up dealing with because it bothers you so much, you can also be proactive and organize a team of like-minded individuals who are willing to volunteer some time to tidy up. That way, you can all put in five minutes into cleaning up, rather than doing it all yourself. Plus, it should send a friendly reminder to the rest of the office. As with most pet peeves, espe cially ones you encounter often, the common options are to face the problem or to get over it. Just be careful how you decide to confront someone- dont be accusatory or hostile. Sometimes the best way to get people to understand where youre coming from is to be honest and speak from your own perspective. No one (hopefully) wants to be the annoying co-worker, so addressing the issue head on can often be the solution youre looking for. And if any of these pet peeves resonate with you, then you can rest assured that youre not the only person whose co-workers are driving you crazy. What are your minor office annoyances? Mistakes Every New Private Pilot Should Avoid

Mistakes Every New Private Pilot Should Avoid Mistakes Every New Private Pilot Should Avoid So you̢۪ve earned your private pilot certificate, and you feel like you can take on the world? Ready to get out and fly to all of those places youve dreamed about? Go for it- but watch out for these common mistakes that new pilots make. Pushing the Limits Most new pilots are hesitant at first to get out and push the limits, but after you get your license and accrue a few hours of uneventful flying, you̢۪ll be more likely to press the boundaries. Most general aviation accidents occur with private pilots at the stick, and the largest number of those pilots have less than 500 hours. This is a good time to be extra careful, not to exceed your personal limitations. If you feel like expanding your horizons or getting more practice with crosswind landings or at soft fields, enlist the help of an instructor. Remember, its a license to learn! Not Considering Your Passengers If you̢۪re a new private pilot, you̢۪re probably excited to take your friends and family flying. But be cautious- they may not be as excited as you are, and they̢۪re definitely not as familiar. So make sure to give them a thorough briefing, explain everything that you̢۪re doing, and don̢۪t forget to bring a sick sack! And take them up on a nice calm day. I often see new private pilots taking mom or dad up when it̢۪s gusting to 15 knots and bumpy. You want them to enjoy the flight, and you certainly don̢۪t want to scare them or make them sick! Botching ATC Communications New pilots don̢۪t often have a lot of experience with ATC communications or within airspace other than at their home airport. Take the time to prepare ahead of time for any flights you make that require contact with ATC. You can̢۪t fall back on your instructor to correct you anymore, and you can̢۪t lean on the idea that you̢۪ll just tell them you̢۪re a student pilot and they̢۪ll go easy on you. ATC is not to be feared, but take the time to listen to LiveATC.com or to practice the radio calls so that you can practice the right way. Not Getting Out to Explore Okay, so if you̢۪ve made it through the first three suggestions, that means you̢۪re brave enough to get out and explore. When flights are accomplished within your personal margin of safety, you̢۪ll gain valuable experience and the confidence to get out and explore more often. But many pilots, once they̢۪ve completed the private pilot certificate, are burnt out, out of cash and out of energy, and they dont want to go out and explore, at least not immediately. Burnout certainly warrants a break from airplanes, but don̢۪t take a break for too long! Get out and use your skills or else they̢۪ll deteriorate. And the longer you go without flying, the less confident you̢۪ll feel. So go fly somewhere! Comparing Yourself to Other Pilots Don̢۪t ever compare yourself to the pilots around you. We̢۪re all different, and we all have different personal limitations and different ways of doing things. Just because you see two other pilots heading out on a windy day does not mean that you should. If you̢۪re not comfortable, stand your ground and pay attention to your personal minimums. Don̢۪t change your minimums just because you see other pilots with higher minimums. And don̢۪t give in to the temptation to be as good as another pilot, or to show them up. It̢۪s never worth it, and it̢۪s way more embarrassing to crash an airplane than to cancel a flight and go home. Remember- there are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots.

Learn How to Punctuate Dialogue in Fiction Writing

Learn How to Punctuate Dialogue in Fiction Writing Learn How to Punctuate Dialogue in Fiction Writing Nothing marks a beginning fiction writer faster than improperly punctuated dialogue. Because most academic papers do not use dialogue, many students would benefit from a fiction writing class if they intend to write in this genre. Before taking on a fiction writing project, be sure to review punctuation and grammar rules to ensure your writing is clearly understood and well-received. Do's Include commas and periods within quotations Add a period at the end of a quote before the next quote Consistently italicize words within interior dialogue Don'ts Include commas and periods outside of quotations Separate two quotes with a comma Use end quotes at the end of the first paragraph if the next paragraph is also part of the quote Punctuation Rules for Dialogue Get ahead of the game! Learn these rules to avoid obvious mistakes: Use a comma between the dialogue and the tagline (the words used to identify the speaker, or he said/she said): I would like to go to the beach this weekend, she told him as they left the apartment.Periods and commas go inside the quotation marks in American writing (the Brits have slightly different rules); other punctuations- semicolons, question marks, dashes, and exclamation points- belong outside unless it directly pertains to the material within the quotes, as in this example from Raymond Carvers short story Where Im Calling From: I dont want any stupid cake, says the guy who goes to Europe and the Middle East. Wheres the champagne? he says, and laughs. In the next example, the question mark goes outside the quotation marks because it is not part of the material being quoted: Did he say, We should all go to the movies? Also note that the sentence ends with only one mark of punctuation: the question mark. In general, dont use double punctuation marks, but go with the stronger pu nctuation. (Question marks and exclamation points are stronger than commas and periods. Think of it as a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, if it helps.) When a tagline interrupts a sentence, it should be set off by commas. Note that the first letter of the second half of the sentence is in lower case as in this example from Flannery OConnors story Greenleaf: That is, Wesley said, that neither you nor me is her boy.To signal a quotation within a quotation, use single quotes: Have you read Hills Like White Elephants yet? he asked her.For interior dialogue, italics are appropriate, just be consistent. Do I really love her? he thought.  If a quotation extends to more than one paragraph, do not use end quotes at the close of the first paragraph. Use them only when a character is finished speaking:and in the end, I didnt even love her.I did think of marrying her, though.   Common Mistakes in Dialogue Punctuation Incorrect dialogue punctuation and formatting is common among beginning fiction writers. The most common mistake is the use of quotations outside of the spoken word. Remember: Only the words that the person says should be inside the quotation. Here are two more common dialogue mistakes to avoid. Punctuation and Spacing In this example, the exclamation mark should be inside the quotation, as its part of the dialogue: Incorrect:  Surely she has gone mad! she said.  Correct: Surely she has gone mad! she said.   Commas Between Two Sentences of Dialogue Another way that people incorrectly write dialogue is by putting a comma between two sentences instead of a period. Incorrect:  I have made up my mind, she said nodding, I do not want to marry him.  Correct: I have made up my mind, she said, nodding. I do not want to marry him.   Remember that two spoken sentences are still two separate sentences and should be separated by a period. Top 10 Things to NOT Put in a Resume

Top 10 Things to NOT Put in a Resume Top 10 Things to Not Put in a Resume Top 10 Things to NOT Put in a Resume With apologies to David Letterman, here's my list of top 10 things you should not put in a resume (in bold), followed by possible responses from employers well, more likely kept to themselves: 1)Took time management seminar Response: Did you have a problem managing your time? You won't here. 2)Organized office football pool for 5 years Response: Hmmm, last I checked, that wasn't in the job description. 3)References available upon request Response: Thanks. If we're interested, we'll ask for them. 4)Email: ilikesbeer@address.com Response: Thank you for sharing. Circular file! 5)Saved company money Response: Well, that's nice. But how much? 6)Didn't work for six months due to medical condition Response: Legally, I can't ask about this, but since you volunteered this information, I'm off the hook. 7)Thirty years with just one company Response: So, why do you want to make a change now? 8)OBJECTIVE: Accounting position Response: I like reading resumes as much as I like doing my taxes, so make it easier on me and give me more information. 9)Was president of college fraternity Response: Wonder if he knows the `ilikesbeer' guy? 10)Verry detail-focussed Response: Yeah right! Nuff said.

How Your Network Can Help You Be Better at Your Job

How Your Network Can Help You Be Better at Your Job How Your Network Can Help You Be Better at Your Job Staying in touch with your network isn’t easy- from finding reasons to drop people a line to finding the time to actually do it, it’s no wonder many of us put it off until it’s essential (i.e., when we’re job hunting). But really, if you only reach out to people during times of career transition, you’re wasting a valuable resource for your professional development. Read on for five easy ways your contacts can help you excel at your current gig- and how to reach out the right way.You Need: A RoadmapYou Know: Someone Who’s Been ThereMy former boss gave an amazing speech on the occasion of leaving our organization, lightened by humorous references to the number of times she Googled how to do something. And while I could (and often do) make use of that option, I also have a better one: her. She’s written budgets and strategic plans and gone toe-to-toe with difficult clients. Meaning, when I’m staring down a new or confusing situation, I know she can advise me from a place of experience. Even though she’s no longer my boss, she’s part of my network- and she’s been willing to help me on numerous occasions.Of course, there are a few things to keep in mind when approaching a contact for advice. First, be armed with a specific pitch that concisely lays out what you need and how much time it will take: “Would you have an hour in the next week to answer a few questions about writing a budget?” versus “Can you help me with some budget stuff?”Second, do your prep work before the meeting and try to get as far as you can on your own- the last thing you want is to squander the time with FAQs. Third, this can’t be an every week (or even an every month) thing. Unless this contact is your mentor, you should reach out once a quarter, max. Need more help than that? Reach out to another contact. You Need: Expertise (in a Hurry)You Know: Someone in a Different FieldYou have a contract that needs looking over, and your friend is a lawyer. Or, you need to brush up on your language skills before an upcoming business trip, and your old colleague moonlights as a language tutor. When you need specialized expertise in a pinch, that’s a perfect reason to reach out to the people in your network. In some ways, that’s exactly what they’re there for. That said, be careful when you’re asking someone in your network for a favor- especially if it’s to help you more quickly or more cheaply than someone you’d hire. The key here is to remember that networking is a two-way street. One great option is bartering- i.e., in exchange for the language tutor giving you a crash course before your trip, you offer to revamp his homepage. Another option is asking to be pointed in the right direction: If your friend the lawyer can’t help you with the contract because it’ll require sizable revisions, she should still be able to recommend someone who can help you or give you a sense of what hiring a professional may cost. Either way, you’ll have m ore information than you began with. You Need: Help With an EventYou Know: Someone Who’s Done it BeforeEvent planning requires a lot of legwork, not the least of which- from sourcing venues to finding quality vendors- is logistical. Imagine how much time you could save speaking with someone who already knew that this venue has a ton of parking and that venue has issue with its air conditioning; that this bakery is excellent and that caterer is not.So, if you’re tasked with throwing a conference, event, or even a meeting, reach out both formally and informally to your networks. Tell your friend who coordinates events for her job and your friend the recent bride alike that “other projects as assigned” translates to gala-planning, and you’d love their advice. And don’t be afraid to post a Facebook or LinkedIn status asking your contacts if they know any great, local venues (or caterers, or photographers). You’ll save tons of time on your search and be moving forward with t ried and trusted locations and vendors. You Need: Honest FeedbackYou Know: Someone Who You Trust A young woman I recruited a few years ago recently asked me to beta test me her new site. She was clear in her expectations- she needed honest (brutal, where necessary) feedback before the site was launched- and she knew that friends and family (the people you can hook to beta test because, well, they love you) can be shy when it comes to criticism.I was particularly enthusiastic about helping because of the way she reached out to me. She wrote me a thoughtful email, briefly filling me in on what brought her to the project and clearly expressing what she was trying to do with the site. Moreover, once I agreed to be a beta tester, she responded to every email I sent promptly, thoroughly, and with gratitude. The way she conducted herself through this process not only convinced me to spend hours scouring the site, but also left me with an even higher opinion of her professionalism. By reachi ng out, she not only got the help she needed- she deepened her relationship with a contact. You Need: Nothing- Right NowYou Know: Two People You Can ConnectHave a friend who’s looking to start freelancing- and an old colleague who successfully made the switch years ago? A co-worker who needs to hire a temp and a college buddy who’s a recruiter? Introducing them is more than just good karma- it’s good for your career. Yes, networking is all about making connections that will be valuable for you, but sometimes what’s most impressive is someone who helps and connects others when there’s nothing in it for him or her. And need I mention the fact that when you need an introduction down the road, the people you connected will likely be inclined to return the favor? In these cases, just make sure to do a double-opt-in intro, asking each party for his or her permission to make the introduction before you actually do. A simple, “Hey, I know you’re looking for an extra set of hands - want me to make an intro to my friend the recruiter?” works perfectly.Reaching out to your networking is a necessity when you’re looking for a job. But even when you’re not- don’t forget all your connections can do to help you do your job better.

4 Great Moments That Advanced Robotics

4 Great Moments That Advanced Robotics 4 Great Moments That Advanced Robotics 4 Great Moments That Advanced Robotics Once, advanced robotics was a futuristic science fiction talein the mix with the jetpacks wed all be using to fly to this place and that. But, unlike some other dreams from sci-fi magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, robotics hasnt been grounded. There are still key moments in this evolution which slowly seeped into our consciousness, hitting on every area from the consumer to the medical profession. To list them all would be tough, but here are a few that, in their own way, were watershed. 1. This Machine is Clean It can hurt your back, it can bore you to tears. Welcome to the fun that is vacuum cleaning. But one robot was out to change that: Roomba, a household appliance countless people love. But how can a robot that cleans floors be that important? Its what it represents. Automation had to do with making lives easier, creating time for other things. And it seemed it had passed us by. Roomba started passing people by in their house, on its way to cleaning another rooms dirt. Its so progressive in the sense that not only does it go around and does a service but it also is sensitive to the area and it goes back for recharging, says Nina Mahmoudian, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University. Its representing something that roboticists aspire to, having robots that are functional and are independent of humans especially for energy maintenance. An operator overseeing the work of the Unimate Pumo 500 and Pumo 560 robots. Image: UL Digital Library / Wikimedia Commons 2. Getting Industrious Unimate started its own version of the industrial revolution as the first industrial robot in the early 1960s. An aid for General Motors, its part of the reason so many products are so rapidly available todayand some think if not for the industrial side, robotics may have disappeared as merely a creation of the moment. If not for robots making strides in industry, I dont think robotics would have existed today, says Mahmoudian. It brought a shape to itit helped people better understand its possibilities. It could make it clear through seeing numbers in business. 3. A Mona Lisa among Machines The accuracy of a robot at work, the know-how of the surgeon, the savings to the individualall these things come into play with the robotic-assisted surgery invention known as da Vinci, allowing with its curvatures to get where human hands couldnt inside the body. That was a breakthroughhaving something very functional and something that can change the surgeons role, says Reza Langari, director of the Laboratory for Control, Robotics, and Automation at Texas AM University. It was unimaginable and da Vinci made it possibleand now you can search for robotic assisted surgery and feel a much greater sense of trust in the process because of its success, says Mahmoudian. An artists concept of NASAs Mars rover Curiosity. Image: NASA / JPL-Caltech / Wikimedia Commons 4. Not from Around Here NASA may have massively switched gears but its innovations will affect us forever. The Mars Rover was simply a robotics breakthroughahead of its time, regardless of whether Matt Damon and his team from The Martian are the only humans to ever walk on the fourth planet from the sun. The last launchthat was so challenging as a mission and the success in landing and the deployment was inspiring . Mahmoudian says. When I was watching it, I was thinking this is really a dream come true for any of us. I thought 10 years than this was impossible and now we want better and longer. Then the idea will expand, that is why that was a great moment in robotics. It autonomously moved in a hostile environment and you see the outgrowth today. We have robots that move to disaster sites better than ever and many move on trams and wheels and manipulate in various different ways . We take a piece of Mars back home in the success of the rover. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. If not for robots making strides in industry, I dont think robotics would have existed today.Prof. Nina Mahmoudian, Michigan Technological University

Choosing the Correct File Format for Your Cover Letter

Choosing the Correct File Format for Your Cover Letter Choosing the Correct File Format for Your Cover Letter Writing a strong cover letter with an easy to read format is not enough to get selected. You must choose the correct file format for your cover letter too. You may ask why it is so important. Well, using the correct file format will not only make you look more professional but also will show the content of the cover letter as you intended it to be. And, hence a lot of emphasis is given for choosing the correct file format. Which File Format to Use? There are two main file formats that are used generally for sending cover letters. They are PDF and Ms Word. While both file formats are used side by side, there are some cases where it is better to use the other one. Since the company may use Applicant Tracking System software, you need to use either a PDF or .doc file. Sending your cover letter as a Word file makes it sure that the hiring managers can easily read, edit and print your data. While using a PDF file ensures that your data cannot be modified and the hiring managers will see your cover letter as you created it. Although, if the company explicitly mentions the file format they need, make sure you send in that format only. How to Name Your File? A lot of applicants, even after successfully writing the perfect content for their cover letters, use unprofessional names for their files. You cannot just name it whatever you like; you need to name it in such a way that the hiring managers can understand it is a cover letter. Also, you need them to recognize or differentiate between your cover letter and several others. So, rather than saving your file as “Cover-Letter”, save it as “John-Harrington-Cover-Letter”. Mention your full name along with the word cover letter.
